Family

Recruited from Kyabram, Garry Lyon quickly established himself as the cornerstone of the Melbourne Football Club during its resurgence in the late 1980s. A classic centre half-forward, Lyon combined strong contested marking hands with an imposing physical presence and reliable goal-kicking, famously booting ten goals in a semi-final against Footscray. He assumed the captaincy in 1991, leading the Demons with distinction for several seasons and earning multiple All-Australian selections alongside two Keith 'Bluey' Truscott Medals.

While his peak was dominant, the latter stages of Lyon's career were heavily restricted by chronic back injuries which limited his mobility and game time. These physical struggles ultimately forced his retirement in 1999, concluding a career where he served as the spiritual leader of the club through the 1990s. He remains a pivotal figure in the club's modern history, recognised as a member of Melbourne's Team of the Century.
