Bio
The son of Collingwood premiership player Craig Kelly, Jake Kelly had to carve his own path after being overlooked by the Magpies as a father-son prospect. Recruited by Adelaide with pick 40 in the 2014 Rookie Draft, he forced his way onto the senior list through sheer work rate and established himself as a reliable, rugged defender. Known affectionately as "The Bull," Kelly was rarely a high-production accumulator but became a staple of the Crows' backline due to his physical commitment and discipline, notably playing in the club's 2017 Grand Final side.
After eight seasons in South Australia, Kelly exercised his rights as a restricted free agent at the end of 2021 to join Essendon. He served the Bombers for three seasons as a defensive stopper, often tasked with locking down dangerous medium-sized forwards while providing experienced leadership to a developing group. Kelly finished his career with 168 games to his name, departing the league at the conclusion of the 2024 season as a selfless team player who consistently performed the unglamorous shutdown roles required of him.
