A Rutherglen icon whose VFL career was cut short by parental decree rather than lack of ability, Jim Hallahan Sr. remains the patriarch of a significant footballing dynasty. Standing six feet tall—a formidable size for the era that allowed him to impose himself as a follower or key position player—he was enticed from the Ovens and Murray league to St Kilda in 1904, where he managed just two senior games and a single goal. His brief city stint ended when his parents reportedly sent an SOS ordering him to "leave that nonsense alone" and return to the bush for "proper work." Hallahan obliged, returning to the Redlegs where he competed until 1924 in a staggering 28-season career, eventually seeing his sons Jim Jr. (Fitzroy) and Tom (St Kilda), as well as great-grandson Mitch Hallahan (Hawthorn), follow his path to the elite level.
