Bio
The middle sibling of the renowned Hovey dynasty, Jim Hovey arrived at Kardinia Park from Modewarre as the club rebuilt its list following the Second World War. A tough and consistent back pocket, he quickly cemented a spot in the defensive unit, playing every game after his debut in 1946 and polling a respectable five Brownlow votes the following year. While his younger brother Ron would go on to captain and preside over the club, Jim’s time in the VFL was cut short when he accepted a coaching position in the bush. He left Geelong after the 1948 season to captain-coach Murtoa and later Mooroopna, carving out a successful regional career before his son Wayne continued the family line at the Cats in the 1970s.
