Family

Born into a famous Cats lineage as the son of 1940s player Jim Hovey and nephew of former player and future club President Ron Hovey, Wayne Hovey was recruited from Shepparton United in the Goulburn Valley. A smart half-forward with a natural eye for goal, he had to overcome early knee cartilage issues before breaking into the Geelong senior lineup late in the 1977 season. He made an immediate impact in his brief cameo, headlined by a superb performance against Richmond in Round 20 where he booted four goals in a heavy loss at Kardinia Park. Despite averaging nearly two goals a game during his six-match stint, Hovey was unable to consolidate his place in the side beyond that solitary season, leaving behind a short but efficient record for the club his family served for decades.
