Teams

Recruited from Dimboola, Larry Watson paved the way for one of Essendon’s most famous dynasties as the older brother of club legend Tim Watson. A strongly built utility capable of playing on a wing or half-back flank, Watson made an immediate impression at Windy Hill, remarkably finishing third in the 1976 Best and Fairest count despite appearing in only 11 senior games that season. Despite this promising start, he struggled to secure a permanent place in the side due to injury and fluctuating form, eventually crossing to Fitzroy where he managed a handful of games before departing the VFL. Watson subsequently forged a successful career in the SANFL with West Adelaide, where he is fondly remembered as a 1983 premiership player, claiming his flag on the very weekend his brother played in Essendon’s Grand Final defeat to Hawthorn.
