Bio
Arriving at Richmond via the father-son rule in the 1995 National Draft, Joel Bowden carried the legacy of his premiership-winning father, Michael, with distinction across a durable 14-season career. Initially deployed as a goal-kicking flanker and midfielder, he evolved into one of the league's premier rebounding defenders, using his precise left foot to control the tempo and distribute from the back half. His tactical acumen was perhaps best illustrated—and most controversially demonstrated—during a 2008 match against Essendon where he deliberately rushed multiple behinds to preserve a narrow lead, a move that directly precipitated a change to the AFL's laws regarding deliberate rushed behinds.
Despite often playing in struggling sides, Bowden maintained a high standard of individual excellence, earning dual All-Australian selection and winning back-to-back Jack Dyer Medals in 2004 and 2005. A prominent figure off the field as President of the AFL Players' Association, he remained a pivotal leader at Punt Road until his mid-season retirement in 2009. He departed as a member of the top ten for games played in Richmond history, though he holds the unfortunate distinction of playing the most VFL/AFL games without participating in a final, a testament to his longevity and consistency during a lean era for the Tigers.
