Bio
Selected with pick 7 in the 2006 National Draft, Joel Selwood slid down the order due to concerns over a pre-existing knee injury, a decision that rival clubs would soon rue. Hailing from the prominent footballing family that also produced AFL brothers Adam, Troy, and Scott, Selwood made an immediate impact at Geelong, securing the Rising Star award and a premiership medallion in his debut 2007 season. Establishing himself as one of the era's premier inside midfielders, he was renowned for his unwavering courage, elite clearance work, and a distinct technique for drawing high contact that made him a nightmare for opposition tacklers.
Selwood succeeded Cameron Ling as captain in 2012, embarking on a tenure that would see him surpass Stephen Kernahan to become the VFL/AFL record holder for most games played as captain. Throughout his career, he remained a loyal one-club player, guiding the Cats through a transitional period that kept the club in constant contention. His leadership was defined by his capacity to lift the team in critical moments, often through sheer will and contested ball-winning. Selwood bowed out in the most fitting manner possible, retiring immediately after captaining Geelong to the 2022 premiership, becoming the only player in Geelong history to win four flags and cementing his status as one of the club's all-time greats.
