Bio
Recruited from Yarrawonga in the Ovens & Murray Football League, John Lloyd arrived at Princes Park in 1965 as part of the driven new era under captain-coach Ron Barassi. A reliable half-back who wore the number 18 guernsey, Lloyd established himself in the senior lineup during the 1967 season after his 1966 campaign was cut short by a broken arm. He played his final VFL match in the infamous 1967 Second Semi-Final loss to Richmond, departing the club for Eaglehawk just a year prior to the Blues' 1968 premiership triumph. While he went on to win a best and fairest at Werribee and coach Braybrook to three consecutive flags, Lloyd’s legacy in VFL/AFL history is famously tied to the father-son rule; his 29-game career fell just short of the qualification threshold required to draft his son, future Essendon goal-kicking legend Matthew Lloyd, to Carlton.
