Bio
Recruited from the Western Jets as a 16-year-old compensation selection following Todd Ridley's departure to Fremantle, Matthew Lloyd wasted little time establishing himself as the premier full-forward of his generation. Renowned for his explosive speed on the lead, strong hands, and a meticulous set-shot routine that famously involved tossing grass into the air to gauge the wind, Lloyd served as the focal point of Essendon's attack during their formidable era in the late 1990s and early 2000s. His clinical finishing was instrumental in the Bombers' historic 2000 premiership campaign, a season that saw him boot over 100 goals, a feat he repeated the following year.
A three-time Coleman Medallist and five-time All-Australian, Lloyd eventually succeeded James Hird as club captain ahead of the 2006 season. His tenure as skipper occurred during a difficult transitional period for the club, requiring him to shoulder a heavy burden as the team's primary avenue to goal while mentoring a developing list. His career concluded abruptly in 2009 following a heavy bump on Hawthorn's Brad Sewell that resulted in a season-ending suspension, prompting his retirement. He departed the game as Essendon's all-time leading goalkicker and remains one of the most prolific forwards in VFL/AFL history.
