Bio
A mobile ruckman capable of drifting forward to impact the scoreboard, Justin Charles began his career with the Western Bulldogs, where he spent five seasons battling injury and fighting for consistent selection. He crossed to Richmond ahead of the 1995 season, eventually finding career-best form in 1996 as he cemented a spot as the club's first-choice ruck. However, his tenure at Punt Road is largely remembered for the controversy in 1997 when he became the first VFL/AFL player to test positive for anabolic steroids, a decision he admitted was a misguided attempt to repair a chronic Achilles tendon injury. Handed a significant 16-match suspension, Charles returned briefly in 1998 but was unable to recapture his fitness or form, retiring shortly after to close a career defined by both his evident skill as a big man and the historical weight of his tribunal ruling.
