Recruited from a rugby union background via the Sydney Swans Academy, Lachlan McAndrew entered the AFL system as a raw project player selected in the 2021 Mid-Season Rookie Draft. Standing at 209cm, the towering ruckman spent the majority of his tenure in Sydney developing his craft in the VFL, relying on his significant reach and athleticism to compete in ruck contests while adapting to the nuances of Australian rules football. He managed just two senior appearances for the Swans in 2023, finding his pathway blocked by experienced recruits including Brodie Grundy, and was ultimately delisted at the conclusion of the 2024 season. Offered a career lifeline by Adelaide via the rookie draft, McAndrew moved to West Lakes ahead of the 2025 season to provide depth to the Crows' tall stocks and press for further senior opportunities.
