Bio
Selected with pick 2 in the celebrated 2001 'Super Draft', Luke Ball was a foundational pillar of St Kilda's resurgence in the early 2000s. A courageous inside midfielder renowned for his clearance work and defensive pressure, Ball ascended to the club captaincy and became a fan favourite at Moorabbin. However, his time at the Saints ended in controversy following the 2009 season; after falling out of favour with coach Ross Lyon regarding his suitability for the team's game plan, he requested a move to Collingwood. When a trade could not be facilitated, Ball took the risky path of entering the national draft, where he was eventually secured by the Magpies.
Ball's transition to Collingwood proved immediate and decisive, adding crucial grit to their engine room and resulting in a premiership victory against his former side in 2010. While he was never the quickest player on the ground, his football intelligence and clean hands in traffic made him an elite stoppage specialist throughout his career. He served as President of the AFL Players' Association and remained a key leader at the Magpies until chronic back issues forced his retirement in 2014, leaving the game as one of the most respected contested ball winners of his era.
