Bio
Recruited from the Sandringham Dragons with pick 51 in the 2000 National Draft, Matthew Ball arrived at Hawthorn with strong bloodlines as the son of former South Melbourne and Richmond player Ray Ball and the older brother of future premiership midfielder Luke Ball. Primarily a running defender who could also rotate through the midfield, Ball possessed good skills and game sense but endured a frustrating career ravaged by persistent injuries that stifled his momentum. Despite spending six seasons at Glenferrie Oval, he struggled to break into the senior side consistently, often finding himself playing for the Box Hill Hawks in the VFL where he was a reliable contributor. He managed just 17 senior games in total and, unable to cement a spot in the developing squad under Alastair Clarkson, was delisted at the conclusion of the 2006 season.
