Bio
Recruited from the North Ballarat Rebels with pick 53 in the 2012 National Draft, Martin Gleeson was a courageous intercept defender who often played taller than his slender frame suggested. The nephew of Carlton premiership player Adrian Gleeson, he became a reliable fixture in the Bombers' backline, known for his ability to read the flight of the ball and distribute efficiently by foot. After a breakout 2017 season where he finished top ten in the best and fairest, his career was derailed by a severe ankle injury sustained in the 2018 pre-season that forced him to miss the entire year. While he returned to play senior football over the next three seasons, the emergence of younger defensive options eventually saw him squeezed out of the best 22, and he was delisted at the conclusion of the 2021 season just three matches shy of the 100-game milestone.
