Michael Voss

Arriving at the Brisbane Bears as a teenager from Morningside via the Queensland zone concessions, Michael Voss wasted little time establishing himself as the face of the code in the northern states. He debuted at just 17 and rapidly evolved into the prototype of the modern midfielder: physically imposing, brutally tough, and capable of winning his own ball against heavy tags. Renowned for his fearless attack on the contest and his ability to drift forward to kick clutch goals, Voss possessed exceptional vision and a unique horizontal handballing technique that fuelled Brisbane's fast-moving game plan.

Following the merger that formed the Brisbane Lions, Voss ascended to legendary status as the captain of the club's triple-premiership dynasty from 2001 to 2003. Despite sharing the 1996 Brownlow Medal with James Hird at a young age, his legacy is primarily defined by his inspirational leadership during the Lions' dominant era. He fought through debilitating knee injuries in his final seasons, often playing as a permanent forward to extend his career, before retiring as one of the most respected captains in VFL/AFL history.
