Bio
Hailing from Western Australia and the younger brother of West Coast premiership star Jeremy McGovern, Mitch McGovern was selected by Adelaide with pick 43 in the 2014 National Draft. Initially establishing himself as a dynamic key forward with strong hands and an impressive vertical leap, he became a valuable asset for the Crows, famously kicking a goal after the siren to secure a draw against Collingwood in 2017. However, his time in South Australia ended controversially when he requested a trade to Carlton at the end of 2018, despite having recently signed a long-term contract extension.
McGovern arrived at Princes Park on a significant contract but initially struggled to deliver on high expectations as a forward, with his early seasons at the Blues hampered by recurring injuries and conditioning battles. Following a period of intense scrutiny regarding his form and durability, he successfully reinvented himself as an intercepting defender. Leveraging his natural aerial ability and elite field kicking, McGovern transformed into a key pillar of Carlton's backline, evolving from a mercurial goalkicker into a composed veteran who reads the play and sets up counter-attacks from defence.
