Bio
Scion of black and white royalty, Rhyce Shaw arrived at Collingwood as a father-son selection in the 1999 National Draft, the son of former captain Ray Shaw and nephew of premiership skipper Tony. While he possessed electrifying pace and featured in the Magpies' 2002 and 2003 Grand Final sides, his nine seasons at Victoria Park were often turbulent, marred by inconsistent form and intense scrutiny regarding his disposal efficiency. By the end of 2008, despite being a regular senior player, the environment at the Pies had stagnated for him, and he was traded to the Sydney Swans in a move that would ultimately define his legacy.
The shift north precipitated a remarkable career renaissance. Under the tutelage of Paul Roos and later John Longmire, Shaw reinvented himself as one of the league's premier rebounding defenders, utilising his elite aerobic capacity to break lines and launch counter-attacks from deep in defence. His reliability and drive were immediately recognised, resulting in runner-up finishes in the Bob Skilton Medal in both 2009 and 2011. The crowning achievement of his career came in 2012, where he played a pivotal role in the Swans' premiership victory, finally shedding the ghosts of past Grand Final heartbreaks to retire in 2015 as a revered club leader and mentor.
