Bio
Recruited from the local northern suburbs, Tony Shaw arrived at Victoria Park carrying the weight of a famous name as the younger brother of captain Ray Shaw. Lacking the natural athleticism or speed typically associated with elite midfielders, Shaw built a career on sheer determination, football intelligence, and an uncanny ability to accumulate possession in heavy traffic. Initially a ball-winning rover, he evolved into a disciplined tagger and on-field general who could dismantle opposition game plans through precise positioning and relentless pressure.
Shaw's leadership qualities saw him appointed captain in 1987, tasked with uniting the playing group after a period of internal instability. His crowning achievement arrived in 1990, where he led Collingwood to a drought-breaking premiership and claimed the Norm Smith Medal for a dominant performance on the Grand Final stage. Retiring in 1994 as a dual Copeland Trophy winner, he departed as the club's games record holder, a benchmark that stood for nearly 30 years before being surpassed by Scott Pendlebury, securing his legacy as one of the Magpies' most enduring icons.
