Bio
Arriving at Glenferrie Oval as a decorated mature-age recruit, Robert Day joined Hawthorn in 1971 after a stellar SANFL career where he captained West Adelaide and earned All-Australian selection. He slotted seamlessly into John Kennedy's side, bringing class and experience to the half-back flank. His tenure is best remembered for his bittersweet role in the 1971 Grand Final; Day was arguably the best player on the ground in the first half before a heavy collision with St Kilda's Neil Besanko left him concussed and ruled out of the match at the main break. He watched from the sidelines as his teammates staged a famous comeback to secure the premiership, earning Day a flag in his debut season. Injuries forced his retirement the following year, but his contribution to the club has been revived in the modern era by his grandson, Hawthorn midfielder Will Day.
