Bio
Debuting for St Kilda as a 16-year-old schoolboy, Russell Greene quickly established himself as a precocious talent at Moorabbin, claiming the club's best and fairest award at just 19 years of age. Despite his standing as a key pillar in the Saints' future, Greene became the centrepiece of one of the league's most significant mid-season transfers. In 1980, with St Kilda facing severe financial difficulties and seeking to restructure their list, he was cleared to Hawthorn halfway through the season, abruptly swapping a struggling outfit for a club on the verge of a golden era.
At Hawthorn, Greene evolved into one of the competition's premier running players. Predominantly utilised on a wing or as a ruck-rover, he was renowned for his tireless endurance, ball-winning consistency, and distinctive running style. He became an integral engine room component of Allan Jeans' dominant 1980s lineup, adding a Peter Crimmins Medal to his accolades in 1984 and earning All-Australian selection in 1985. His transition to Glenferrie Oval proved immensely fruitful, resulting in three premiership medallions in 1983, 1986, and 1988.
