Teams

Selected with pick 73 in the 1999 National Draft, Ryan Houlihan proved to be a recruitment steal for Carlton, forging a long career that outlasted his brothers Damian and Adam at the elite level. A silky outside runner known for his precise kicking and smooth movement, Houlihan was utilised across half-back, the wing, and half-forward, where his ability to hit targets opened up the game for teammates. While his style was sometimes contrasted against the league's increasing focus on high-pressure contested football, his class and finishing skills ensured he remained a first-choice player for multiple coaches.

His tenure at Princes Park coincided with a turbulent era for the club, spanning the fallout of significant salary cap penalties and multiple wooden spoons before the Blues eventually returned to finals contention. Despite the team's fluctuating fortunes, Houlihan displayed remarkable durability, becoming just the 32nd player in Carlton history to reach the 200-game milestone. He retired at the conclusion of the 2011 season as a life member, remembered as a talented utility who provided essential polish and distribution during a rugged period for the Navy Blues.
