Bio
Recruited with pick 23 in the 2021 National Draft, Sam Butler arrived at Hawthorn with a reputation as a dynamic small forward, following in the footsteps of his premiership-winning older brother, Dan. A product of the Gippsland Power, he built his game around defensive pressure, tackling intensity, and opportunistic goalkicking, showing early glimpses of talent during his initial seasons at Waverley Park. However, his development was severely hampered by a significant leg injury sustained in the VFL early in 2024, which wiped out his season just as the Hawks were restructuring their attack. While the club supported his rehabilitation by re-listing him as a rookie, Butler faced a difficult challenge reclaiming a senior spot in a forward line that had become increasingly crowded with high-profile recruits and emerging stars, ultimately finding himself fighting for opportunities on the fringe of the best 22.
