Bio
Recruited with the first selection in the 2018 National Draft, Sam Walsh arrived at Princes Park carrying the burden of significant expectations but immediately justified the hype. A product of the Geelong Falcons, he was touted as the most professional junior prospect in years and seamlessly transitioned into AFL football, claiming the 2019 Rising Star award in a landslide. Unlike many young midfielders who require seasons to build an endurance base, Walsh entered the league with an elite tank, allowing him to impact contests late in quarters and accumulate possessions at a prodigious rate from his debut.
Walsh has since evolved from a high-production wingman into a balanced inside-outside midfielder known for his courageous attack on the ball and relentless work ethic. His reputation as a big-game player was solidified during Carlton's 2023 finals campaign, where he was awarded the Gary Ayres Medal as the best player of the series following a string of dominant performances. Despite managing recurring back issues during the prime of his career, he has remained a vital component of the Blues' engine room and a key leader, serving as vice-captain and providing a dynamic counterpoint to the physical presence of Patrick Cripps.
