Teams

Recruited from Clarence in Tasmania, Stephen MacPherson arrived at Footscray in 1982 and quickly endeared himself to the club's supporter base with his uncompromising approach to the game. While he lacked the silky skills of some of his midfield contemporaries, the rover and forward pocket compensated with ferocious tackling pressure and a desperate desire to win the contested ball. Affectionately known as "Super," he possessed a crafty goal sense that allowed him to drift forward and hit the scoreboard regularly, making him a difficult matchup for opposition small defenders who struggled to match his work rate.

MacPherson remained a constant presence at the Western Oval through a rollercoaster era for the Bulldogs, featuring prominently in the side that reached the 1985 Preliminary Final and sticking with the club during the fight against a merger in 1989. He evolved into a senior leader during the team's resurgence under Terry Wheeler in the early 1990s, offering grit and experience to a developing list. He retired in 1995 as a life member and devoted one-club player, leaving a legacy of hardness that his son, Darcy MacPherson, would later emulate at the Gold Coast Suns.
