Bio
Recruited from Sturt in the SANFL, Todd Viney chose a career in football over a promising future in tennis, arriving at Melbourne in 1987. He quickly developed a reputation as a hard-at-the-ball midfielder who thrived on physical contests and high-pressure situations. Viney was the archetype of the courageous on-baller, often playing with a disregard for his own safety to win possession, though he also possessed the skill to execute effectively under duress. His consistency and leadership made him a central figure in the Demons' lineup throughout the 1990s, where he was instrumental in driving the club's midfield standards.
Viney's standing at Melbourne was cemented by a distinguished record that included two Keith 'Bluey' Truscott Medals and All-Australian selection in 1998. He served as club captain for his final two seasons, retiring in 1999 as one of the most respected figures in the game. His connection to the Demons extended well beyond his playing days, returning in various coaching and football department roles, while his legacy was further entrenched when his son, Jack Viney, joined the club as a father-son recruit to continue the family's combative style in the red and blue.
