1 revision

Recruited by Carlton with pick 30 in the 2017 National Draft, Tom De Koning arrived with a strong football pedigree as the son of former Footscray player Terry and the older brother of Geelong premiership defender Sam. A prototype modern athlete, De Koning established himself as a mobile ruckman capable of spectacular aerial feats and ground-level follow-up work that belied his 203cm frame. Despite his obvious talent and vertical leap, his tenure at Princes Park was often defined by a fluctuating battle for the undisputed number one ruck mantle, frequently sharing duties with Marc Pittonet or managing injury setbacks that hampered his continuity during key developmental years.

After eight seasons in navy blue, De Koning exercised his free agency rights to join St Kilda ahead of the 2026 season, departing Carlton just as he reached the 100-game milestone. The move to Moorabbin represented a significant shift for the tall utility, offering a fresh environment to maximise his prime years and potentially shoulder a heavier workload in the centre square. While his capacity for highlight-reel marks has never been in doubt, De Koning's next chapter will likely be judged on his ability to translate his athleticism into consistent physical dominance and contested marking around the ground.
