Bio
Selected by Geelong with pick 19 in the 2019 National Draft, Sam De Koning is the younger brother of Carlton ruckman Tom De Koning and emerged from the Dandenong Stingrays program. After a patient development phase that saw him play just one senior game in his first two seasons, he exploded onto the scene in 2022, cementing himself as a cornerstone of the Cats' backline. An athletic key defender renowned for his elite intercept marking and composure under pressure, De Koning played a critical role in Geelong's 2022 premiership triumph, handling seasoned opponents with a maturity beyond his years. While primarily stationed in defence, his versatility and height have seen him occasionally deployed in the ruck, establishing him as one of the most valuable structural assets at Kardinia Park.
