The son of former St Kilda, South Melbourne, and University ruckman Tom Fogarty, Tom Fogarty jnr arrived at the Junction Oval with a famous surname and a towering frame for the era. Recruited from local side Auburn in 1931, the 185cm prospect was built to play key position football, following in the footsteps of his father who had captained two VFL clubs before his tragic death in 1922. Fogarty jnr broke into the senior side as a 21-year-old, debuting in a Round 1 victory over Essendon, but struggled to hold a consistent spot in the lineup over three seasons. He managed just 13 senior appearances between 1931 and 1933, serving largely as a depth player during a difficult period for the club before departing the VFL scene.
