Police had the gates closed on the first AFLW match in 2017, locking out up to 2,000 fans at Ikon Park, and the AFL chief executive went outside to apologise.

The game had been moved from Olympic Park Oval to Ikon Park because of the demand, and 24,568 still got in.

The first recorded Darwin footy match came nine days later.
