Selected by Essendon with pick 10 in the 2020 National Draft, Zach Reid arrived at Tullamarine from the Gippsland Power as a highly touted key defensive prospect. Standing over 200cm, he was recruited to eventually anchor the Bombers' backline with his elite intercept marking and classy ball use. However, his development was severely hampered by a relentless run of injury setbacks, including glandular fever, recurring back stress fractures, and various soft tissue issues. These interruptions prevented Reid from building match continuity, restricting him to just 19 senior appearances across six seasons and leaving him as a talented but perpetually unavailable figure during his time in the red and black.
