Bio
Recruited from the Melbourne Teachers Training College, Alf "Lofty" Williamson was a tall half-forward whose brief VFL career was defined more by tribunal hearings than goal-kicking. After crossing from Carlton to Melbourne midway through the 1914 season, Williamson's aggression immediately landed him in hot water; he served a three-week ban for rough conduct before being handed a massive 15-week suspension for elbowing in his very first game back against Richmond. With his football future stalled by the judiciary, he enlisted in the AIF, rising to the rank of Captain before being killed in action at Bullecourt in 1917. Although his own games tally was modest, Williamson holds a significant place in football history as the great-uncle of Gary Ablett Snr and the great-great-uncle of Gary Ablett Jnr.
