The eldest of the famous Ablett dynasty from Drouin, Geoff established himself as a star in his own right well before his younger brother Gary became a household name. A blistering winger known for his electric pace and goal-kicking ability, he utilised his background as a professional sprinter to break lines and punish opposition defences. During a decade-long tenure at Hawthorn, he became a key component of the club's success, playing in the 1976 and 1978 premiership sides and famously dominating the Grand Final Sprint competition during the late 1970s.

Following the 1982 season, Ablett departed Glenferrie to join Richmond, a move that saw him briefly unite with his other brother, Kevin. While his time at Punt Road and a subsequent final season with St Kilda did not yield the same team success as his Hawthorn years, he remained a durable contributor until his retirement. He finished his VFL career having played 229 games across three clubs, remembered primarily as one of the fastest players of his generation and a vital member of the Hawks' golden era.
