Bio
Recruited from Drouin, Gary Ablett snr initially struggled to adapt to the rigours of VFL football during a brief, six-game stint with Hawthorn in 1982. After walking away to play country football, he was coaxed back to the elite level by Geelong in 1984, joining his brother Geoff at Kardinia Park. Possessing a rare combination of brute strength, explosive acceleration, and supreme aerial judgement, Ablett spent the first phase of his career as a roam-anywhere flanker and winger. His ability to break tackles and take spectacular marks over packs made him a nightmare for opposition defenders, though his discipline and training habits occasionally drew scrutiny during his early years.
In the 1990s, coach Malcolm Blight moved him permanently to full-forward to extend his longevity, a masterstroke that saw Ablett win three consecutive Coleman Medals and become the fifth player in history to kick 1000 goals. His legacy is defined by his sheer individual dominance, most notably his nine-goal performance in the 1989 Grand Final which earned him the Norm Smith Medal in a losing side. While he never captured a premiership, Ablett is widely considered the greatest player to wear the Hoops and was named as a half-forward in the AFL Team of the Century.
