Bio
Arthur Hiskins, affectionately known as "Poddy," was a defensive stalwart for South Melbourne who played a pivotal role in the club's success during the early 20th century. Recruited from Rutherglen to join his older brother Fred at the Lakeside Oval, he quickly established himself as a dashing half-back flanker, renowned for his exhilarating pace and ability to launch attacks with long, driving drop-kicks. He was an integral member of the 1909 premiership side, cementing his place in the club's history as a reliable and damaging defender who could consistently break lines.
His career trajectory was significantly altered by the Great War, where his service overseas created a three-year hiatus during his physical prime. Despite the interruption, Hiskins returned to the VFL with his skills intact, evolving into a senior leader who captained the side and briefly served as captain-coach in 1920. His ability to maintain form over 16 seasons allowed him to amass a significant games tally for the era, retiring as a revered figure who helped bridge the club's pre-war golden era with the 1920s.
