Recruited from South Fremantle with pick 13 in the 2000 National Draft, Ashley McGrath joined the Brisbane Lions at the height of their power. While breaking into such a formidable lineup proved difficult initially, the skilled Western Australian established himself as a regular fixture in time to play a key role in the 2003 premiership victory. McGrath was the definition of a utility player; starting his career as a dangerous small forward with clean hands and goal sense, he eventually transitioned into a rebounding defender who used his elite disposal to set up play from the back half.

McGrath remained a constant figure at the Gabba for 14 seasons, serving as a vital link between the dynasty era and the rebuilding years that followed. His longevity allowed him to become just the second Indigenous player to reach 200 games for the club, a milestone match that provided the signature moment of his career when he converted a set shot after the siren to seal a comeback win against Geelong in 2013. He retired in 2014 as a respected veteran and mentor to the club's younger players, leaving the game as a premiership player and Lions life member.
