Hailing from Alice Springs, Gilbert McAdam arrived in the AFL with a formidable reputation, having already claimed the 1989 Magarey Medal as the SANFL's best and fairest player while at Central District. The brother of St Kilda trailblazer Greg McAdam, Gilbert was a gifted, smooth-moving midfielder who combined elite disposal skills with a dangerous eye for goal. He was a mature-age recruit when he debuted for the Saints in 1991, quickly establishing himself as a key playmaker capable of turning a match with his evasiveness, vision, and precise delivery inside 50.

McAdam's time at Moorabbin is best defined by his courageous performance at Victoria Park in 1993. On a day where he and teammate Nicky Winmar were subjected to relentless racial vilification by the Collingwood crowd, McAdam responded with a best-on-ground display, booting five goals to silence the hostile gallery. While Winmar’s post-match gesture became an iconic moment in Australian history, McAdam’s on-field dominance was the catalyst for the Saints' historic victory that afternoon. He was traded to the Brisbane Bears for the 1994 season, where he added class and experience to a developing list, playing a significant role in the club's rise toward finals contention before concluding his AFL career.
