Recruited from Kooweerup in West Gippsland, Jack O'Rourke was an opportunistic half-forward and rover who hailed from a prominent footballing family, counting Carlton and Fitzroy player Frank O'Rourke as a brother. Standing just 175cm, he established himself as a dangerous option near goal for St Kilda during a particularly bleak era for the club, providing a rare spark in a side that claimed two wooden spoons during his five-season tenure. Seeking a change of fortunes, O'Rourke crossed to Fitzroy in 1925, where he produced the most consistent football of his career and booted 41 goals in three seasons with the Maroons. A reliable contributor who possessed innate goal sense, he finished his VFL time with an impressive strike rate of nearly a goal a game before being cleared to Horsham in the Wimmera District Football Association in 1928.
