James Peatling entered the AFL system as a GWS Academy graduate selected by the Giants with pick 8 in the 2021 Mid-Season Rookie Draft. Initially deployed as a versatile flanker capable of playing both defensive and attacking roles, he carved out a niche with his elite tackling pressure and turn of foot, eventually transitioning into a dynamic midfield option. Despite a breakout 2024 campaign where he featured heavily in the Giants' engine room, a squeeze for spots and a desire for greater job security saw him request a trade to Adelaide at the end of that season. He arrived at West Lakes as a ready-made asset, adding crucial defensive intent and transition speed to the Crows' midfield group.
