Bio
Recruited from the Geelong Falcons with pick 52 in the 2014 Rookie Draft, Lewis Melican bided his time in the reserves before emerging as a disciplined key defender for the Swans. A traditional lockdown backman rather than a rebounding creator, Melican built his game on spoiling ability, closing speed, and the capacity to nullify the opposition's dangerous tall forwards. Despite earning a Rising Star nomination in his debut 2017 season, his progression was heavily stifled by recurring soft tissue injuries, which frequently kept him on the sidelines and prevented him from locking down a permanent position in the best 22 for several years.
Melican's career is defined by his resilience and eventual resurgence later in his tenure. After spending significant periods as a depth player fighting for selection, he enjoyed a career-best campaign in 2024, finally finding the body continuity required to become a mainstay in the Swans' defence alongside Tom McCartin and Dane Rampe. His perseverance was rewarded with a Grand Final appearance and the achievement of his 100-game milestone, securing his status as a reliable senior figure at the club after more than a decade on the list.
