Bio
Recruited from Berwick, Michael Tuck initially bided his time in the reserves before establishing himself in a Hawthorn lineup teeming with superstars. While he lacked the muscular definition of many contemporaries, his wiry frame concealed deceptive strength and elite endurance. He became the quintessential ruck-rover, easily identifiable by his long sleeves and loping stride as he accumulated possessions and drove the Hawks' engine room for two decades.
Tuck's longevity allowed him to span multiple eras of dominance at Glenferrie Oval, eventually succeeding Leigh Matthews as captain in 1986. Under his understated leadership, the club adopted a ruthless professionalism that secured four flags in six years. He retired following the 1991 premiership with a VFL/AFL record of 426 games, a benchmark that stood for a quarter of a century. Perhaps even more significant is his haul of seven premierships from eleven grand final appearances, a record that remains unmatched in the history of the competition.
