Bio
Arriving at Geelong via the father-son rule with the 40th pick in the 2001 National Draft, Gary Ablett carried the immediate expectation attached to arguably the game's most famous surname. While he began his career as an elusive small forward, his permanent move into the midfield in 2007 established him as the competition's premier player. This positional switch was the catalyst for Geelong's dominant era, where Ablett proved instrumental in the 2007 and 2009 premiership victories, winning his first Brownlow Medal in the latter year. In one of the most significant transfers in league history, he departed the Cats at his peak to become the inaugural captain of the Gold Coast Suns in 2011.
At the Suns, Ablett shouldered a heavy burden as the marquee leader of a raw expansion side. Despite the lack of on-field team success, his individual output remained elite, resulting in a second Brownlow Medal in 2013 and four club champion awards during his stint in Queensland. His playstyle was defined by a low centre of gravity and immense core strength, which allowed him to break tackles and execute clean skills in heavy traffic, all while maintaining the damaging goal sense of his early years.
