Recruited from Lalor in the Diamond Valley Football League, Rod Waddell’s entry into the VFL was marked by a bizarre administrative error. He initially trained and played reserves football for Collingwood under the belief he was residentially zoned to the Magpies, only for officials to realise he actually belonged to Carlton's zone. Once the paperwork was corrected, Waddell joined the Blues as a pacy wingman and flanker known for his speed and flair. After struggling to break into a powerful Carlton lineup that was in the midst of a premiership era, he was cleared to Geelong mid-season in 1982 in search of greater opportunity. While he added another 20 games to his tally at Kardinia Park, he found it difficult to lock down a permanent senior spot and finished his VFL career in 1984. Today, he is often recognised as the uncle of talented AFL brothers Daniel, Shannon, and Steven Motlop.
