Bio
Recruited from the North Ballarat Rebels with pick 10 in the 1997 National Draft, Shane O'Bree began his career with the Brisbane Lions. While he showed early promise in Queensland, he found it difficult to cement a permanent spot in a midfield unit that was on the verge of becoming a dynasty. Seeking a return to Victoria and greater opportunity, he controversially moved to Collingwood via the 2000 Pre-Season Draft, where the Magpies utilized the first pick to secure his services.
Once at Victoria Park, O'Bree established himself as a vital component of the Collingwood engine room for a decade. A prolific ball-winner and clearance specialist, he was renowned for his "in and under" work rate and his capacity to win contested possession to feed outside runners. He served as a key lieutenant to Nathan Buckley and eventually became vice-captain, playing integral roles in the 2002 and 2003 Grand Final campaigns. A model of consistency, O'Bree's career ended with bittersweet timing, as he retired at the conclusion of the 2010 season just weeks before the club broke through to win the premiership.
