Bio
Tom Atkins serves as a prime example of the value found in mature-age state league pathways, having forced his way onto the Geelong senior list after a standout tenure in the VFL. A former captain and Best and Fairest winner of the Cats' reserves side, Atkins was selected in the 2019 Rookie Draft and initially carved out a niche as a high-pressure small forward. His relentless tackling and hunger for the contest endeared him to the coaching staff immediately, but it was his evolution through the defensive half and eventually into the midfield engine room that unlocked his true potential.
By the 2022 season, Atkins had established himself as a critical component of Geelong's premiership-winning midfield, providing the grunt and defensive accountability required to balance the team's attacking flair. Renowned for his ability to win hard ball at stoppages and lay bone-crunching tackles, he developed from a role player into one of the club's most reliable contested beasts. Now a veteran with over 150 games of experience, Atkins remains a spiritual leader for the Cats, setting the physical standard for the playing group while mentoring the next generation of inside midfielders.
