Bio
Mark Blicavs stands as one of the most successful code-switching experiments in the modern era of the AFL. Originally a steeplechaser aiming for Olympic qualification, he was recruited by Geelong as a Category B rookie, bypassing the traditional elite junior pathways entirely. While his arrival was viewed as a speculative punt on raw athletic potential, Blicavs quickly bridged the gap in football craft, utilising his elite endurance and 198cm frame to become a unique proposition for the Cats. His transition from a raw project player to a polished professional silenced early critics who questioned his kicking mechanics and game sense, proving that elite athletic traits could translate into top-tier football performance.
Throughout his career at Kardinia Park, Blicavs has defied positional classification, serving as Chris Scott's ultimate "fix-it" man. He has been deployed with equal effect as a mobile ruckman, a tall wingman, a hard-running tagger, and a key defender, often shifting roles mid-game to disrupt opposition structures. This extreme versatility was recognised with two Carji Greeves Medals and All-Australian selection, culminating in a premiership medallion in 2022. Now a revered veteran approaching the 300-game milestone, Blicavs remains a critical structural component for Geelong, celebrated for his durability and his ability to impact the contest in almost any part of the ground.
