Bio
Max Holmes arrived at Geelong via the 2020 National Draft after the Cats aggressively traded a future first-round pick to secure him at selection 20. The son of Olympian Lee Naylor, Holmes entered the system with an elite athletic profile, quickly earning a reputation for his explosive speed and endurance. His early career was remarkably promising but defined by a bittersweet 2022 campaign; he established himself as a key contributor on the wing, only to miss the club's premiership victory due to a hamstring injury sustained in the Preliminary Final.
In the seasons following that heartbreak, Holmes evolved from a pure outside runner into a dynamic, line-breaking utility capable of splitting games open through the midfield and off half-back. His ability to carry the ball at pace and deliver inside 50 became central to Geelong's transition game as the club navigated a period of list regeneration. Now surpassing the 100-game milestone, Holmes has matured from a high-potential prospect into a core pillar of the Cats' engine room, fully justifying the significant draft capital used to recruit him.
