Stengle stars as Cats grind down Suns at Kardinia Park

Geelong relied on possession control and a four-goal masterclass from Tyson Stengle to defeat Gold Coast by 24 points at Kardinia Park on Saturday. In a low-scoring, tactical affair, the Cats held firm against a competitive Suns midfield to win 9.7 (61) to 5.7 (37). Goals were at a premium from the outset, with the home side keeping Gold Coast goalless in the first quarter to establish an early 12-point lead. While the Suns fought back in the second term behind majors from Matt Rowell and Ben King to cut the margin to seven points at half-time, they struggled to maintain possession against a disciplined Geelong outfit. The Cats dominated the ball, racking up 370 disposals to 286 and taking 105 marks to the Suns' 55. This 'keepings off' style allowed Geelong to deny Gold Coast the football for long stretches, despite the clearance count ending level at 50 apiece. While the Suns managed to generate 51 inside 50s—just four fewer than the Cats—their efficiency going forward was poor against an organised defence. Stengle was the clear difference-maker in a game devoid of high scoring, finishing with four goals. He was supported by the high-pressure small forward brigade of Oliver Dempsey, Gryan Miers, and Brad Close, who each chipped in with a goal. For the Suns, the scoring load was spread with singles to Rowell, Bailey Humphrey, Ben Long, Jed Walter, and King, but they lacked a focal point to capitalise on their stoppage work. Geelong steadily extended their lead after the main break, kicking 3.3 to 1.2 in the second half of the game to seal a professional, if gritty, victory at home.
