13 August

Melbourne and Carlton played a Victorian Football Association match under electric light at the MCG, eight days after the ground's first night football.

Grounds

The white ball burst within minutes of the start of the Melbourne v Carlton night match at the MCG, and the Argus judged play with the dark ball the only amusing part of the evening.

The match began an hour late because of problems with the electricity.

Oddities

Sunshine's inaugural VFA captain-coach Ken Seymour was suspended until 1962 after a match against Yarraville, with a charge of misconduct against an umpire among five against him.

Umpires and tribunal

The AFL charged Essendon with conduct unbecoming or likely to prejudice the game's reputation, under Rule 1.6, on the strength of an interim report from the anti-doping authority.
