North Melbourne's Fred Rutley took part in a half-time brawl against Geelong at Arden Street that ended with the VFL tribunal disqualifying him for life, a ban lifted in time for him to play again in 1930.
Tribunal chairman Sir Walter Baldwin Spencer called it one of the worst cases ever to come before it.
Umpires and tribunal
St Kilda protested Melbourne's win at the Junction Oval on 1 August 1925, and Gerry Donnelly turned out to have been mistakenly granted a permit when he was bound to play for North Melbourne.
Melbourne kept the points but had to clear Donnelly to North Melbourne immediately.
